From Mineral Springs to "Bath City"
Christian Clemens platted Mount Clemens in 1818 along the Clinton River, the same year Macomb County was established with the city as its seat. In the 1870s, failed attempts to drill salt wells accidentally struck mineral water, and the discovery made Mount Clemens a globally known health-spa destination nicknamed "Bath City" through the early 20th century -- a place whose entire identity was tied to water in the ground.
